My Other Love

What is "My Other Love"? Decorating........ I just love getting in and making a room take on a whole new look. Hubby and I have just spent a week at our house in Burra and turned the front room into a formal loungeroom. We did just have a bed and chest of draws in there and it did look rather drab.....but not anymore.

So I thought I would show you some before and after photos of all our hard work. Really it's not hard work when you love doing it.

Hubby and I work well together when it comes to decorating. I buy and plan it all and we both get in and work the magic. He is good at getting up high and I work well down low. At the end of the day it all happens.

At long last the piano has a home. It was spending it's days in the hall but not anymore. It has pride of place in the new formal loungeroom. The room did have a sliding door and I soon got rid of that and put a by-fold with leadlight in it. I am not a fan of the old sliding door!!! Next year we plan to do up the hall and I think we will need more than a week. It's very long, many doors and I want to put a new front door with leadlight in the frame either side of the door. I'm already planning it and now I just have to get my bits and wait until May 2011.

At Last I Can Show

At last I can show you all the little bag I made for my beautiful niece, Amy. She is the daughter of my sister and I felt very special to have been asked, by Amy, to make this for her to use on her wedding day.

I hand sewed 262 beads around the top and it was made out of satin which matched Amy's dress perfectly. A face lift.

No not my face , my blog is the one with a facelift!!! Not that it has been a total facelift but it looks better. I haven't been happy for a long time with this and that and wanted my blog to look more interesting and to express friendliness and to show that people who visit my blog mean a lot to me. So I do hope my blog now expresses this and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for visiting like you do. Without you all, my blog would be a waste of time.

I bought this great book "Wonderful 1 Fabric Quilts" by Kay Nickols and it is fantastic. Throughout the book it shows you how to make quilts with only one fabric and it is how you cut the fabric that creates the over all look. You use what is called "Wall Paper" fabric. It is fabric with stripes and repeat patterns. You can either fussy cut or random cut for different effects. From one piece of fabric you can get 2 totally different quilts, depending what method you use for cutting.

Now to the table runner. This is my first (so far only) table runner that I have made and I used the "random cut method" from 1 piece of fabric. It was so much fun and I can't wait to make a quilt and I plan to use the fussy cut method for this. It will take more material fussy cutting but I think it will be worth it.

To Show or not!!!!

I didn't know whether to show "My Rooster" or not but then thought oh well here goes!!! He is out of Creating Country Threads Vol 10 No.8. He was to be filled with Hobby Fill only but I have put rice in his feet because I want to use him as a door stop. The 2 males in this house just laughed when I showed them.....you would have thought I would have known better. I guess we shouldn't let what others say or do affect us but their laughing did. At the moment "My Rooster" is sitting in the cupboard waiting for me to get over it. I will bring him out soon, I promise.

This is block 4 of the Breast of Friends. I completed it a few weeks ago and forgot to show you all. The border against my lace table cloth doesn't show up very well but it does look good in person. I think anyway.

Can it be so long?

I cannot believe it has been that many weeks since I last updated my blog. Life has been busy but now that my Hubby has his pilots licence things will slow down. No more trips to Adelaide taking me away from what I love doing. Yippeeeee.

I have done afew things in the sewing room. I won't show everything now.........I want you to keep coming back to see what else has been happening!!!

I would like you to meet Lizzie. I only made her this week and I am very happy with the way she has turned out. She is hanging on the wall in my country diningroom. Lizzie is my second doll and there were somethings I wanted to improve on and I think I have. The colour of her skin, the size of her limbs, the style of dress is all better that the first one. I really wanted to decorate her in an olde worlde / country look and I kind of think she has the look!

More fabric

Isn't buying fabric addictive? One piece just isn't enough and you try to tell yourself "I'm going to be good and not buy anymore"..............yeah right!!! I bought these fat 1/4s at my local Newsagent. They have a lovely little corner with all sorts of quilting bits and bobs and every time I go in there the fabric calls me over. Good thing I live 125km away from the Newsagent. I'm planning to do a Stack n Slash with them and thought I would add lace here and there. I have never made one before but can't wait to get started. Just have to finish what I am doing at the moment. Don't want a UFO flying around :)

When I went to Hetty's Patch with my sister I just happened to pick up this fabric. I could have picked up more.........lots more.........but was trying to be good. Now I am home I wish I had been bad, very bad!! The 2 top pieces I just had to have and the 2 bottom pieces have already been cut to make the sashing and borders for my Friendship quilt from my quilting group. Once it is all finished I will post a pic to show you all.

Block Three

Here is Block 3 of the Breast of Friends. I did finish it a little over a week ago but only now have found time to show you all.

Like with blocks 1 and 2 I found it enjoyable to put together. Block 4 is going to be very different to the last 3 and I think quicker to put together. I will post a pic of the next one once completed.

I would like you all to meet Percy. Who is Percy I hear you say. He is one cute little pig my sister Lucky1 made soon after she started sewing just over 12 months ago.

Percy goes on holidays and has been to places I have never been to...................like America. He sends photos home to his Mum, Lucky and she posts then on his website. Yes he has a website!!!

Breast of Friends

I am doing the Breast of Friends quilt along with my sister, Lucky. We are doing one block a month in the colours of our choice. I am enjoying the appliques but most of all doing this with my sister is the best part. We live 300km apart but with emails, we are able to checkout what each other is doing. We each have a daughter and plan to leave our quilts, along with a Journal about the making of the quilts to our daughters. The first photo is Block 1.

This is Block 2. At the Adelaide Craft and Quilting fair I bought 2 fat 1/4s for Lucky to use in her quilt and she bought me 2. The reason for this was so that a little bit of us was in the other ones quilt.

It's been so long.

I can't believe it has been so long since I have posted anything on my blog. I do apologize to anyone who has taken the time to come to my blog to see what I have been up to.

What have I been up to? A lot really but not in the sewing room. Life has become hectic with business trips away and other things. I can however see a light at the end of the tunnel and life should get back to normal..........................whatever normal is!!

I think we have to make time for what is important and to say no to things that get in the way. Not always easy but it sounds good all the same.

Sewing Table

Look what my hubby made me. A lovely quilting table for my Bernina. They are not cheap to buy and he is very handy so after him offering to make one, I couldn't spoil his fun and say no.... and he got all the material to make it free!!!!! I have already used it and it's great.

Here are 2 quilts I have recently quilted. The first one was started in June of last year and the second was started in September. My Brother machine was not up to the quilting and in late August 09 I bought myself a Bernina Quilters Edition sewing machine. I cannot believe that I can quilt. I truly was starting to think it was me and not my machine.

So you can imagine how excited I still am when looking at "My 2 Quilts". They are not perfect but they are quilted and I think look okay. I'm hoping the only way I can go with my quilting is up from here!!!!

Another Bag

My daughter Josephine was looking for, you guessed it.............another bag. I bought this fabric at a lovely quilting shop and Josephine was with me and she fell in love with the fabric and I just had to buy it. Thinking one day I would use it to make her something not knowing "that something" would turn up in less than 12 months of the fabric sitting in skinny cupboard!!

I didn't have a pattern so just went for it and I am rather happy with the way it has come up. There is even enough fabric left that maybe I could make myself one.

At last I have the 2 shaggy quilts and the 2 cushions finished for the single beds in our guest room.

The back of the quilts are done in a cream flannel with tiny brown dots on it. The design of the cushions was created as they were being made. Even though I am happy with the way the cushions turned out, I think next time I will draw up just what I want first and then it might not be so stressful.

I really enjoy doing this sort of quilt and I am already planning my next 2! Just need to go to town and visit a quilting shop to get the fabric.

Is it a UFO?

Three years ago we did one of our bedrooms up as a guest room and I had good intentions of making 2 light shades for the bedside lights. Well I got one done at the time and some 3 years later I got the other one made. So here it is...................hot off the press so to speak. It is amazing how good you feel when you get something done that has been sitting there niggling away at you and making you feel guilty.

The shade is made out of cardboard, covered in fabric and then decorated. I made some roses out of ribbon to place at the front of the shade.

So my question is.................was it a UFO when it hadn't been started even though it's mate had been made and was in full use?

Birthday Present

Look what I got for my birthday from my sister Lucky. For those that don't know she is new to sewing and I am amazed at how well she is doing considering she hasn't been sewing for very long at all.

I use it to hold my DMC thread and what I am working on at the time when doing hand embroidery. Thanks Sis for a wonderful and special present.

My Daughter's Bag

My daughter Josephine is having her birthday next Saturday and I thought I would make her a bag. I already had the fabric bought for the job and thought, why don't I make the bag for her birthday and put her other presents into it.

She loves green, pink and purple put together and the hardest thing making the bag was picking the right fabric. I felt the bag needed something else so I designed 4 pockets to go on the front and the back. She not only loves those colours, but loves buttons so each pocket has a pretty button on it.

The Journal Cover below is the one I made for my Swap Partner Farmnan62 (Robyn) from the Craft Forum. Robyn loves animals and I just happened to have ribbon with animal prints on it.

The Journal Cover above is what Robyn made for me. I love flowers and I will enjoy using my new Journal to write bits and pieces in about my sewing.

Journal covers are fun to make and you can let your imagination run wild if you dare. It certainly makes a boring journal look ab fab!!

Shaggy Quilts

I have been so busy lately that not a lot of sewing has been done but I am hoping this will all change now and things in my life might slow down a little allowing me to sew more. I have missed getting amongst my material and creating. We have had on going problems with our "new" computer but it is back now from another holiday visiting the doctor so fingers crossed, it is all fixed and I can get back to sharing with you what I have been making in the sewing room.

I just love making Shaggy Quilts and below is one that I have just finished. They are so easy to make and being a "quilt as you go" they are lots of fun to put together. I am doing up a bedroom for guests in blue and cream and thought it would be nice if the 2 single beds each had a shaggy quilt folded at the end for those cold nights.

Here is the second shaggy quilt for the bedroom. The squares are quilted and now all I have to do is sew all the squares together, put the binding on, wash it and then throw it into the dryer to get the shaggy affect. The 2 quilts will be the same as far as the number of squares and material used but the placement of squares will be different. Here's hoping our visitors will be warm!!

I'm back with some Goodies

It seems like forever since I was able to come on and update my blog. After deciding to get another computer, because the one we had was rather sick, we have discovered having a new one was not going to be as easy as plugging it in and turning it on! Fingers crossed we are getting through the problems and it will be plain sailing from here on. Now I just hope when I download all this to my blog, it looks the same as how I have set it here. Computers............they have a mind of their own.

Yes......................I am afraid to say more bags!!! These 2 bags are ready for sale at the Quilting Exhibition that will be held in Burra. My Quilting Group each year has a quilt exhibition for the month of May and this will be my first time as I am not only a new quilter but I joined the group last year.

I won't mind if the one on the right doesn't sell as I would love to keep it. I guess if it does, I will just have to make another!

This wall quilt is what was on Esmerelda when I was running my competition when looking for a name for my new Quilting Frame.

I have quilted it by hand using Perle` cotton which has given it a nice affect. I have put a hanging sleeve on the back and it is now ready to hang in the Burra Art Gallery for the exhibition.

Here finally, is my finished Pinwheel Quilt. While it is no masterpiece I am happy with how it has turned out for my first pieced quilt. I enjoyed doing the binding by hand and found it to be quite relaxing.

The fabric in a couple of places did bunch up as I was quilting it but it's only minor. I have asked some quilting ladies from my quilting group why this might have happened and I have some great tips and ideas to use when I quilt my next quilt.

Opening Day is Here

Today is the day us swap partners get to open our pressie from each other and look at what I got from my Paper Bag Swap Partner Vicki. Isn't it divine. I love it. The more you look at the bag the more you see on it. Vicki has put a lot of work into it and I feel very lucky. Thank you so much Vicki.

This bag below is the bag I made from the contents from the purple paper bag I received from Vicki. I posted a picture back a bit on my blog of that purple bag!! So now you can see not only some of what was in the bag but what I did with it. My swap partner for this swap was Trish and I do hope she likes her gift.

When it came to doing the lining I didn't have a big enough piece of fabric left and I really wanted to use what Vicki had sent so I joined up the bits of fabric left and I was able to get a piece big enough to cut the lining from. Then to cover the seams I used a piece of material/ribbon (not sure what you call it) that Vicki had sent. I was pleased with the way it looks inside. Kind of funky I guess. The only things I added from my stash to the stash Vicki sent was a button for the loop to go over and a few beads to go with some Vicki sent. This has been a great swap. Thank you Vicki and Trish.

My baby has arrived

Look what arrived in the mail last Friday. I sent away to Victoria for a Quilting Frame. Of course I couldn't wait for the mail truck to arrive to see if "My baby had arrived" and she had! Now for some fun...........lets play a game.

All babies need a name and as I am having trouble finding one for her, I would like you all to assist me. So lets have some fun shall we. All you have to do is leave a message on my blog with a name for my baby and why you think your name is the best.

Yes another Journal!

Over the weekend I thought I would make another Journal but this time I would make the cover fancier than the one for my daughter. So I got out the DMC thread, drew up what I wanted onto my fabric and away I went. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. I think I will have to keep it out of site of my daughter as she will want it because of the colours!

Sneak Peak

Here is a sneak peak of where I am at with my Pinwheel Quilt.

I went to my Quilting Group yesterday and the ladies helped me "sandwich" the quilt. I have never done this before and it was amazing watching and helping them do it. I just love the way quilters help one another. I had a box of 200 safety pins and had to borrow some from another lady. Another box of safety pins is already on the shopping list!

So now it is ready to be quilted and then the binding done. I have so many great ideas from my group that I will not be able to quilt it until I have been to town to buy some special cotton for the project. Stay tuned!

Bowl

A fortnight ago I went to town to have a great day of sewing with my Quilting Group. One of the members taught us how to make these fantastic fabric bowls.

As you can see I made mine in christmas fabric but you could use anything. These bowls would be wonderful for a number of things.

Josephine's Journal

I have never made a Journal Cover before and I thought here goes. My daughter loves pretty things and is always writing things down so I thought she could be the guinea pig for my first Journal.

She loves the colours, pink, purple and green and loves them even more when they are put together.

I gave her the Journal a few days ago and she was delighted. It took her about 1 minute to decide what she would use it for. To keep all her wedding plans in. I think I can hear wedding bells!

Pinwheel Quilt

All 30 blocks are done and now I have to put the quilt top together. While I am looking forward to doing that part, I am nervous about putting the front, batting and back together. The quilt does not have binding but instead is sewn up like you would a pillow case. I think it will look better with binding so I will alter the pattern slightly. Fingers crossed I can manage it!

The quilting for this is simple. Quilt across both diagonals of the blocks, stitch in the ditch down the sides of the vertical strips and the inner edge of the border. Did I say the quilting is simple, I guess we will see!

Paper Bag Swap

I have joined in the "Paper Bag Swap" on the craft forum. This is how it works............I receive a paper bag of goodies from Tozz and I have to make something with those goodies for Trsh-n. While this is going on I have sent a paper bag of goodies to Trsh-n for her to make something for another person. Sounds like fun??? Yes it is.

I have made my gift for Trsh-n but I cannot show you all until she has received it and opening date is March 1st 2009. So all you get to see is the paper bag I got from Tozz.

Quilting Poem

I received this "Quilting Poem" as a kit when I joined in the Cornucopia swap on the craft forum. There were lots of goodies in the cornucopia that was made for me by my swap partner and this quilting poem was one of them.

So I spent Tuesday of this week making it up while I was home alone for 12 hours. I was glad that I had some sewing and heart buttons in my box to embellish it with.

Random Act of Kindness

Look what I got in the mail. The piece of pansy fabric on the right and the piece at the front was sent to me by a friend on a craft forum. She thought it could go in skinny cupboard and I must say it looks very good in there with the other I have. It was sent to me as a Random Act of Kindness. The piece of pansy fabric on the left was some I found while in Adelaide visiting Spotlight.

New fabric

Last month while in Adelaide I went shopping for fabric. My quilting group starts up again this month and I needed to buy fabric so that I am ready to make quilts that are planned for this year.

Our President has been kind enough to teach us "new ones" a sampler quilt. Another member is going to teach all members a quilt called "Box Floral". I have also bought a metre of fabric to give members a piece to make a block each for me to then make a friendship quilt out of the blocks.

I have to confess that I did buy extra but then who wouldn't when the fabric was normally between $15.00 and $18.00 and it was going out for $3.00 and $ 5.00.

Other quilts planned with this fabric are a Pinwheel quilt (love pinwheels) and a quilt that has old doilies on it. These I will teach myself to do at home.

Yes another bag!

I had this image in my mind of a bag I wanted to make. It had to be in what I thought was country colours.

I bought this material months ago and only yesterday did I find myself making it up. Why the time delay? What if it didn't come up to the image I had in my mind. Easier to leave the fabric un-cut but even then I found the material calling out to me.

So yesterday it sung out so loudly I just had to make it up to keep the material quiet and I am glad I did. Is it how I imagined it would turn out? Yes, but better.

I used thicker cord, cut it shorter than in the pattern and made the material to cover the handles longer to give it a ruffled look. To make it a bit more country looking, I appliqued a love heart on to the front. I included a button and button loop so that I could close the bag up. The lace was white so I used Parisian Essence to give it an aged look.

I love my new bag.

Here are some little bags that I made as christmas presents for family and friends.

So far I have made 8. They are quick and so easy to make. Even though it is time to make something else, I think I will find myself making more of them. Maybe the next one will be for me!!

My first real quilt.

Having only starting sewing this year I don't have many quilts under my belt. So far I have made one shaggy quilt and 2 very plain quillows.

I have for the last 5 months been getting a Block of the Month (BOM) through a quilting shop in Victoria. While I still have 5 months left before I can finish it, I thought I would share what I have done.

I'm waiting for the ric-rac to be sent to finish block 4 and I still have to, with DMC thread, backstitch the words "Home is where the heart resides" on block 5 in the green below the house. The blocks each measure 20" x 20" and there will be a border around the outer edge.

This quilt has taught me colours, piecing and that it is not that hard to make stars! I'm having a ball and as time goes on I will post more pics. I just hope when it comes to quilting it, the sewing machine can handle the size of the finished quilt.

My holiday gift!!!!

You cannot in my books go on a holiday without buying yourself a little gift. My hubby and I went to the Grampians for 8 nights and we had a wonderful time. While we were visiting that area of Victoria we went for a drive to Stawell and you can imagine how excited I was when I came across a lovely little craft shop. So while I ventured inside hubby stayed in the car and I had a ball.

I bought myself this lovely quilt pattern. It measures 20 1/2" x 24 1/2" so it should look great hanging on a wall. Now you cannot buy yourself a gift that is missing pieces so I bought fabric and lace to complete the quilt when I got home. Now to find the time to do it!!!

Here are 3 pieces of fabric (bought on our holidays) that I just had to have. I'm collecting pansy print fabric and as yet I don't know what I am going to do with it, but I know one day a pattern of some sort will jump out and bite me and I will be ready with pansy fabric waiting for me in Skinny cupboard.

So far I have 3 pansy fabrics and hope to get another 2. I keep a little piece of each in my bag at all times so that when I am visiting a town and I hear a quilting shop call out to me, I know exactly what I have home and don't buy more of the same.

As for the other 2 beautiful pieces of fabric in the photo, well I love floral fabric and how could I buy their friend 'Pansy' and not buy them and give them a good home too!

Table Runner

I have just received this beautiful christmas table runner from my forum swap partner Duchess. The christmas fabric is lovely and the work Duchess has put in to making this gift for me is wonderful.

It has inspired me to make a table runner and to give stipple quilting a try.

Meet skinny cupboard who now has pride of place in my sewing area in the breezeway. Why the name skinny cupboard you ask. Skinny cupboard along with her mate, fat cupboard, used to live and work in the schoolroom I had set up when teaching my 2 children School of the Air before they went away for secondary schooling. It was so much easier giving the cupboards names when speaking to the children........"go and get the pop sticks out of skinny cupboard". It just made the whole school day better if you didn't have to explain in detail to a little person just where things were. So skinny cupboard has had a face lift and now holds my small stash of material and other sewing things. I think my sewing days will be so much better now that I don't have to look through boxes to find what I am looking for. The coat rack to the side holds my latest creations.

How cute is this. So much fun to make and you can let your imagination go when picking fabric. A great project if you have lots of little bits of material.

I just can't get enough bags. Big or small I enjoy making them and seeing them hanging around! The bag in the middle is for my daughter and it still needs the cord put in. I have put the flap up on this one so that you can see the pocket.
